You might be sitting there thinking how hard it’s going to be starting your own computer repair business.  The truth is the hardest part is getting started.  In an attempt to help you along your way, here are five easy steps to get you started with your new business.

1) Give your business a name – Giving your business a name may sound like a no-brainer but you need to remember that this is what will represent you before someone actually meets you.

A business name accomplishes two things.  First, once you have a business name to talk about you will feel as if things are progressing.  Second, for billing and tax purposes you will eventually need to have a business name so that you can become a corporation.

2) Business license – Check your local government to determine if you need to own a business license.  Some cities do not require a business license for small business or self-employed individuals.  Others will require a business license that will cost around $50 per year.

3) Liability insurance – Liability insurance is your “just in case policy.”  A certain responsibility comes with owning a computer repair business.  If you are upgrading a video card and accidentally short-circuit someone’s hard drive, you’re going to want to be covered.

Alternatively, not legal advice, you can draw up a document that states that the customer has already made every attempt to back up their information and will not hold you liable for any damages incurred while fixing their computer.  This would probably not hold up if you were to be sued but it can serve as a good warning to your clients that things can go wrong.

4) Purchase the right tools – Every craft needs its tools and the computer repair technician is no different.  Check out our article on how to build your Computer Repair Toolkit.  You do not need to buy everything right away but the more prepared you are, the more professional you will look.  A more professional representation of yourself will lead to repeat customers and word-of-mouth referrals.

5) Get started – Doing all the research in the world is not going to bring you a paycheck.  Do not be afraid to start small.  Start out by working for friends and family then venture out with referrals from your friends and family.  Starting out slowly and gaining experience will serve you well on your way to fulfilling your desire to own a computer repair business.
